You’ll be amazed how many free online tools are out there for you to use. In this face-paced class, we plan to take a look at numerous online tools you can use in your role as an educator. Come learn how to access resources such as lesson plans, rubric makers, web page creators, online quizzes, Internet bookmarking storage, etc., all for free online! Why spend time recreating the wheel when someone else has already done it for you?

During this class, explore the wealth of online resources for educators and come away with tips and techniques to make your life easier. Learn how online file management and social bookmarking sites will save you time. Discover how the ALTEC Star Tools, like RubiStar, QuizStar and TrackStar can make lesson planning and assessments easier. Our TELE course Creating Multimedia Projects with Discovery Education streaming takes place February 1 & 2, from 4:00-7:00 each evening. Did you know that Discovery Education streaming has digital video, audio files, images, and more that can also be used in a variety of multimedia applications? Are you looking for a perfect, easy to do multimedia project? This fast-paced class is for you! Come discover ways to develop curriculum-based digital media projects with DE streaming resources. Student produced videos or digital media projects can empower students with the tools, skills and confidence to take creative control of their research and presentation projects. Teachers can provide engaging lessons by adding some creative multimedia to their lessons. Participants will work together and use DE streaming resources more effectively with free Web 2.0 applications like Glogster, VoiceThread, Photo Story, Animoto and more. Participants may also choose to use iMovie or Movie Maker to develop easy-to-use resources for more media rich lessons. Prerequisite: Bring a lesson idea and organize your DE streaming My Content with songs, images, video, and sound files that support your lesson. Participants should be familiar with one of the applications above. Costs: $149 CSD member; $189 non-member (one graduate credit is also available at additional fee).

At the 2011 METC you can win an iPad by participating in the Midwest Education Technology Conference “Virtual Essay” multimedia project.

Pick your favorite online tool (i.e. Glogster, Animoto, Prezi, VoiceThread) and make a connection between your experience at METC and the conference theme “Motivate, Engage, Transform, Connect.” Be creative with your message as you tell your story! Virtual Essays need not be long, but have a clear message. The submission deadline is a few days after METC 2011 ends- please send essay links in by February 21st.

Easy Steps for Participating in and Submitting to the Drawing:
•  Create your Virtual Essay using an online tool of your choice. This may be done prior to, during or after the 2011 Midwest Education Technology Conference (runs February 14-16th). Note that during the conference, you may take advantage of the Connections Lounge to ask for assistance with an online tool to create your Virtual Essay.
•  Submit the Virtual Essay URL to our Google Doc (information to be posted shortly on http://METCconference.org along with sample essays) by February 21, 2011.
• Drawing held on February 22, 2011; winner announced shortly thereafter.

Classroom Projects Using Digital Photography
A picture is worth a thousand words, so they say. Find out how to use this powerful tool in the classroom. In this class, teachers will learn about the basics of using digital cameras and photography in the classroom. Come learn the parts of the camera, its basic operation, and possible activities that you can use with your students. Find out what can be done with digital images—how they can be enhanced, manipulated, and changed using basic photo editing software. Gain information about how to integrate images into lesson plans and classroom activities. Participants will be encouraged to develop a lesson that incorporates the use of digital images. Bring your own camera and photos, or borrow from us! This class is June 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Thursday marked the second of two days of the Teacher Timesavers: FREE Online Resources tele class.

Participants from school districts all over the St. Louis area took the time with Stacey Franks during today and Tuesday’s class to explore the wealth of online resources available for teachers. The goal is for them to come away with tips and techniques to make their (teaching) life easier!

Just a few of the many Web 2.o resources discussed during the class: iGoogle, iKeepBookmarks.com, Skype, and Voicethread.

Karen MontgomeryOur Tracking Student Learning with VoiceThread class is coming up on June 17 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. We first told you in March that VoiceThread is a free, online, collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to leave comments in 5 ways – using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video. VoiceThread can be used for assessment, foreign language, field trips, art, language arts, social studies, math and science. In the VoiceThread environment, students and teachers can safely share their voices on the global stage. As noted on the VoiceThread website, “with VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world.” In this class, taught by Karen Montgomery, participants will create a project using photos and audio commenting using VoiceThread to document student learning across several content areas. Learn how this multi-media free resource can be used in your classroom (remember, with no software to install in your computer)! This class is $138 for CSD members and $214 non-members.
