Tuesday, May 22, 2012 From Prezi to PowerPoint, Slide into PD at CSD

Did you know that Prezi is a web-based presentation application & storytelling tool that uses a singel canvas instead of traditional slides? Text, videos and other objects are placed on the infinite canvas & grouped together. Prezi is a fresh alternative to PowerPoint. (If you need helping visualizing what it looks like, click here for examples). In this half-day workshop on June 1st, you’ll learn how the canvas allows users to create non-linear presentations, where users can zoom in and out of a visual map. You’ll see how your Prezi can be developed in a browser window, and then downloaded so that no Internet connection is needed when sharing your presentation! Using Prezi to Create Zooming Presentations takes place Friday, June 1st at 12:30 p.m. and runs until 3:30. Register here by May 29th for the workshop- it’s $75 for CSD members, $89 for non-members.

If Prezi doesn’t suite your needs, we are also offering Using MS PowerPoint in the Classroom on June 27th from 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Here, you’ll learn everything from the basics to the more advanced features that make PowerPoint a great tool for student learning. You will have the opportunity to create your own PowerPoint presentation for use in the classroom to introduce or clarify a lesson. Learn how to create photo albums, adventure stories, and Jeopardy games. Learn how to design student PowerPoint assignments that require higher order thinking skills, such as a poetry analysis presentation, and examine assessment methods that will help you grade these student assignments. Walk away with your own presentation and ideas for integrating PowerPoint into your classroom! It’s $149 CSD member; it’s $189 non-member  for this full-day workshop. Collecting Data Using Online Forms: Google 201
Presenter:  Stephanie Madlinger, Ed.S. – Google Certified Teacher Instructional Technology Program Coordinator, Cooperating School Districts
In this session, participants will focus on two of the six Google Docs available, Google Forms and Google Spreadsheets. Through these two tools, you can easily create a questionnaire or survey, invite others to respond, share the results, and then download the data into Excel for easy manipulation.

Practice ideas for using MS Office in your classroom and learn skills at the same time! Here are two popular classes offered by the Virtual Learning Center of Cooperating School Districts:

WINTER 2011 CLASSES:
Using MS Word in the Classroom Jan. 26 & 27    4-7pm    $149 CSD member; $189 non- member (One Grad. Credit Available) MS Word is a powerful word processing program that helps teachers create lessons, tests and letters. Students can use it for creative writing, basic reports or research papers. Learn the basics along with more advanced features such as inserting graphics, clip art, and spreadsheets, transforming text to html, and word art. Participants will also plan a lesson activity incorporating the use of Word such as having students create bookmarks that persuade readers to read the book. Learn how to help students create newsletters and brochures, and how you can create easy to use worksheets with embedded hyperlinks that can help support your students as they create their own projects.

Using MS PowerPoint in the Classroom Feb. 8 & 9    4-7pm    $149 CSD member; $189 non-member (One Grad. Tuesday, August 10, 2010 New Workshop: Creating IWB Lessons using Discovery Education streaming

Did you know that DE streaming digital media resources could be used with your interactive whiteboard (IWB)? You can engage today’s learner by using images, videos, and audio files with IWB lessons. Come learn how to integrate DE streaming digital media into a variety of applications such as a SMART Notebook or a Promethean Flipchart in our new class, Creating IWB Lessons using Discovery Education streaming. You’ll also learn how to develop lessons with PowerPoint, Word, and Excel to be used with any IWB. Participants will work together to develop lessons to use in the classroom today. You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your ability to use both Discovery Education streaming and IWB products in your classroom by creating content that you can share with other educators. You’ll learn tips and tricks for using both SMART & Promethean software’s interactive design and delivery tools.

This workshop is for dynamic educators who are enthusiastic about designing lesson activities to increase student engagement and participation. Prerequisite: Bring a lesson idea and organize your DE streaming My Content with songs, images, video, and sound files that support your lesson. Participants should be familiar with creating a SMART Notebook file or Promethean Flipchart.

This class takes place twice during the 2010-2011 school year: December 6 & 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. OR April 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $149 for CSD members and $189 for non-members. In addition, one graduate credit is available to those interested for an additional fee. Register here.

Discovery Education streaming digital media can be used in the classroom in a variety of ways… engage today’s learner by using images, videos, and audio files in your lessons. By coming to Creating Multimedia Projects with Discovery Education streaming on June 22, you’ll learn how to integrate DE streaming digital media into a variety of applications such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, even SMART Notebook or a Promethean Flipchart. Digital video and audio files can also be used in these applications as well as in a Movie Maker or iMovie presentation. Discovery STAR teacher Stephanie Madlinger leads this workshop.

Ppt Today was the final day of our week of MS Office classes. Ellinder had a full class of K-12 educators interested in learning more about PowerPoint and implementing it into their classrooms. This afternoon, they’ll learn how to design student PowerPoint assignments that require higher order thinking skills  and then examine assessment methods that will help them grade these student assignments!

Some schools and school districts in the St. Louis metropolitan area are members of the CSD’s Computer Services Group. If your district is a Computer Services Group member, check with your supervisor or the appropriate office to use CSG credits for payment of workshops or at the least to qualify for member workshop fee.

Monday, January 12, 2009 Videoconferences with Bill Dallas Lewis

Author, illustrator, and speaker Bill Dallas Lewis lives and works in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. He connects to students (and teachers) all over the United States via interactive v/c. Bill’s  programs range from 1 hour programs to series of 3 videoconferences. His prices are very reasonable- a 1 hour session is only $175!  Bill is super enthusiastic and works wonderfully with students.

Here’s exactly what Bill offers:
Program #1 FOR STUDENTS (2-12) In this single, one hour presentation, Bill shares with students that he went to school where Dr. Seuss went to school. He shares how he read all he could about Dr. Seuss, learning about writing. Bill then graphically takes students through the writing process and the rewriting process. Finally, Bill demonstrates how he uses state of the art, computer graphics applications that can make any thing look real, from image manipulation, to animation, to sound. He lets students know that he has all of this fun, because he reads lots of books.
Cost: $150 for New Links members, $175 for non-member

Program #2 FOR STUDENTS (4-12) This is a three session presentation, running 1 hour and fifteen minutes each. In the first session, Bill interacts with teachers to discuss their interests and questions about the sessions. He then tailors his presentations to meet their interests. Many schools have worked with him to create 30 minute animated cartoons, real children’s hardback books, or even interactive CD’s. In the second session, Bill takes the students through the writing process. He takes the students through the process of story boarding the project. He uses his beyond PowerPoint presentation methods to make the process descriptive and lots of fun. Towards the end of the session, Bill goes in depth into image manipulation and basic animation techniques. In the third session, Bill picks up on more in-depth animation techniques, goes into the world of interactivity, logic and basic fun coding. He then explores the fun of non-linier video editing, and the new world of working with sound.
Cost: $450 for all three sessions for New Links members; $525 for non-members

Program #3 FOR TEACHERS Learn Flash, a fun in-service! This is four, two hour classes. Flash is really fun, but it’s really complex. Bill has taught Flash to 5th and 6th Graders, the Senior Graphics Designers in New York, the Graphics Specialists of the United States Coast Guard in Petaluma, CA as well as designers at The Gap in the Bay area. Teachers, Bill not only teaches Flash, he shares with you how you can integrate it into your classroom, school or school district. Flash makes any curriculum come to life. Program #4 FOR STUDENTS (4-12)
We’ve moved into a new electronic, interactive age. This interactivity is all about the Code. Videogames, cell phones, DVD players, websites, even our cars. Many of us have been led to believe that you have to be a rocket scientist to make up a videogame or a website. Bill would like to have fun with your students sharing with them how computer games are made on a basic and easy to understand basic. Let’s talk about variables, functions, arrays and how math makes games fun. Bill would like to open the minds of students that might want to concentrate on this big new world.
