New Links to New Learning is pleased to announce the return of one of our favorite authors, James Otis Thach.  James will be live at Cooperating School Districts on April 20th to participate in four videoconferences!

Barri live from CSD

This week New Links to New Learning author Barri Bumgarner is connecting to middle school students in Louisiana six times over videoconference to discuss Monsters.

LA classroom

She inspires and encourages young writers to create stories brought about from personal fears, experiences, and real-life issues – “monsters.” By opening the door to the imagination, Barri offers insights to getting kids to write, revise, and share!

Barri will also be presenting at the Midwest Education Technology Conference next month in St. Louis, Missouri. For more information on Barri’s author visit videoconferences or METC, contact Rebecca Morrison at Cooperating School Districts.

Children’s book authors, Patricia McKissack and her son, Fredrick McKissack, Jr., conduct a 60-90 minute session about their collaboration on several books– Black Diamond, the Story of the Negro Baseball Leagues, Hard Labor, and the upcoming graphic novel, Nat Love, Cowboy. During the highly interactive session, the McKissacks will discuss how the team works to maintain consistency, sequence, form, and accuracy. Students will be asked to participate by answering a brief quiz that will identify who might be a good collaborator with them.

During the videoconference with students, the McKissacks introduces themselves and give brief biographical information including how they became collaborators. After a definition of “collaboration” and the many forms it can take, the McKissacks will focus on research writing first draft, editing, and final draft as they are affected by collaboration.  Time for questions and answers from the students will follow, along with a brief test to see who would be a good collaborator for you?

The goal of the project is to introduce students to the process that authors use to write and/or illustrate a book together. In addition, the project will encourage students to work with each other in the spirit of sharing, compromise, and respect for others’ thoughts & ideas.

At the end of the project students will be able to:

•  Work together brainstorming to come up with ideas for writing a short story.
•  Agree upon a story line.
•  Create a draft of the story then hand it off to the writing partner (collaborator).
•  Analyze their writing with each other.
•  Share their work through email with other collaborators.
•  Revise their writing to conform to the correct standards of English.
•  Prepare a finished manuscript (publish).

This videoconference will be $300 per session. Interested? Send your requests to Rebecca Morrison at Cooperating School Districts in St. Louis, Missouri.

Last week, five educators (known as delegates) in the Open World Program, sponsored by the U.S. Library of Congress, came to Cooperating School Districts in St. Louis to learn more about our offerings. The delegates traveled from Russia.

The Open World Program is designed to promote public diplomacy through exchanges of cultural ideas and values and create a positive exchange of ideas and business approaches between professionals and leaders in Russia and the United States.

After meeting with CSD’s CHARACTERplus in the morning on November 11, the group met with Virtual Learning Center staff and coworkers from St. Louis’ RPDC. Topics discussed included New Links to New Learning, our instructional technology academies, TELE workshops, MELL (Migrant English Language Learners), data collection and professional learning communities (PLCs). School set up was also discussed- similarities and differences between the Russian school system and that in the United States. We hope to continue to meet & collaborate- over Skype.

Author of five books for elementary-aged children, Amy E. Sklansky led nearly 20 videoconferences last school year from Cooperating School Districts, speaking with schools across North America, from St. Charles, Missouri to Canada.

She’ll be presenting at the 2011 Midwest Education Technology Conference, too. In her Tuesday session, you can hear how a videoconference works from the presenter’s side: what teachers can expect during an interactive program and how videoconferencing can enhance curriculum. In addition, attendees will learn about the three videoconferences Amy offers to elementary schools through New Links to New Learning, as well as the techniques and tools she uses during the videoconference to keep the participating students engaged and motivated.

For this school year, we’ve  really been focusing on classroom to classroom collaborations over distance learning here in St. Louis area schools.

New Links to New Learning is currently facilitating videoconferences that I’ve started to refer to as the French Connection between two area school districts, as it is two world language classes from different middle schools working together. It’s looking like the sessions will take place after the first of the new year.

A big merci beaucop to all the enthusiastic educators who are working on this project to make it a success. I’m looking forward to reporting back on its progress in the upcoming weeks.
