imageHow can learning to “read” the visual images we see in news reports and advertisements result in critical thought and media literacy for our students, and how does this type of literacy relate to the Common Core State Standards? In this one day workshop on June 20, we will examine how technology has changed the creation of visual images in news and ads and what that effect has been on our students.  Learn how to help students decipher the messages implicit in visual images while developing lessons that align to talk bubbleCommon Core. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 GMLP Media Literacy Mini Conference: Pedagogy & Production

Gateway Media Literacy Partner’s Education Community Engagement Committee is hosting a special event for K-12 educators,  Media Literacy Mini Conference: Pedagogy and Production, at Cooperating School Districts on Friday, June 7 from 7:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. This mini conference is open to library media specialists, teachers, technology integration specialists- anyone who wants to exchange ideas and learn more about media literacy.

Register by May 24, seating is limited to 60 attendees. St. Louis educators Don Goble and Julie Smith will keynote this event, followed by two different session times with various resources, programs, and ideas shared from area experts in the field media literacy.

Cost for event is $10 (cash only) at the door, which covers breakfast and printed materials. For questions regarding the Media Literacy Mini Conference: Pedagogy and Production, contact GMLP ECE co-chairs Mary Pat Gallagher or Rebecca Morrison.

CSD is an institutional member of GMLP.

We’re excited not only to post the winning movies in the 2012 Show-Me a Movie Contest, but also to share a video about the contest, produced by Ladue High School.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013 February 11: Best Practices Conference

Cooperating School Districts’ Best Practices Conference is a full day of learning and sharing the best educational practices. CSD ITEF partnered with the Innovative Technology Education Fund for the conference this year. ITEF is a St. Louis- based charitable nonprofit operating as a private foundation. Best Practices participants will hear keynote Monte Selby, as well as top educators from the St. Louis metro area, whose practices are making a difference for students and teachers, like:

  • Don Goble, Ladue School District, on media literacy
  • Patricia Ulrich, Ritenour School District, on systems thinking
  • Gregory Taylor, St. Louis Public Schools, on creating and using classroom websites for differentiation
  • plus other education professionals from CSD, the St. Louis RPDC, and school districts

In addition, ITEF Spotlight Presentations Include:

  • Using iPads in the Classroom, Affton School District
  • Great Video Made with Inexpensive Gear, Westminster Christian Academy
  • Using Online Courses to Keep Students On Track to Graduate, Marian Middle School
  • iPads and the Library:  Transforming All Students into Digital Learners, Hazelwood School District

Dr. Selby will also present several sessions during both the morning and afternoon, including Emotions: This Crazy Kid is Making ME Crazy and Motivated Meetings: The End of Boring. Dr. Selby will share ideas and strategies to use with children, preK-12; providing solutions to issues and challenges facing classroom teachers today.

You are invited to join area teachers and leaders on Monday, February 11. Online registration ends on February 1, 2013; walk-ins, however, are welcome the day of the conference. (Also scheduled, although in a different section of the St. Charles Convention Center, are the preconference workshops for the 30th annual Midwest Education Technology Conference). baker book / metc 2013Several of the Midwest Education Technology Conference Advisory Committee members have volunteered to read the books being offered at the METC book store  and are providing brief reviews on the content. Here’s the latest:

Media Literacy in the K-12 Classroom

Teachers wanting to tackle media literacy in their classrooms now have a fantastic resource to help them get started.  Frank Baker has created a dynamic tool for teachers across the curriculum.  Each chapter covers specific aspects of media literacy and how to use them in the classroom, including examples, discussion ideas, links and countless additional resources.   What makes this book remarkable is Baker’s ability to provide tools for all ages, it really can be used for K-12 or even graduate-level media pedagogy courses.  Teachers of any subject – of any age group – can find something in this book that will encourage critical thinking of EACH of their students.

As you know from our post earlier this week, Media Literacy Week in St. Louis is coming up October 28 through November 4, 2012. There are many programs, special speakers and resources available for educators during this time. Do note, however, there is an Education and Community Engagement Committee within the Gateway Media Literacy Partners resources that is active year-round. (GMLP hosts Media Literacy Week).  GMLP’s ECE page has educational materials, events, ideas, and recommendations from committee members; take some time to click around! If you have ideas to submit for the page, please leave a comment here and we’ll share the info with GMLP.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012 CSD brings Best Practices to Educators

The sixth annual Best Practices Conference takes place Thursday, November 1 at the St. Charles Convention Center.

Metro area educators are gathering to share practices are making a difference for students and teachers throughout the 1 day conference.

Not all of the sessions have been announced, but here’s a random sampling of topics and school districts represented:

•  Kagan Cooperative Learning | Wentzville School District
•  Elementary Walkthroughs | Wright City School District

Dr. Monte Selby will keynote and present throughout the day as well. In addition, during the evening, Cooperating School Districts is holding its Fall Conference. Friday, August 10, 2012 Academy offers Guidance and Resources to Library Media Specialists

Cooperating School Districts’ Library Media Specialist (LMS) Academy focuses on the changing role of the Library Media Specialist in K-12 education. Today’s LMS must play the versatile role of an instructional partner responsible for ensuring that students and staff are efficient and effective users of information. By participating in the annual academy, you will network with colleagues working in school libraries across the area and globally, understand the meaning of media literacy as it applies to 21st century skills, and learn about digital tools that promote effective use of digital media for students.  The academy will assist you in teaching and connecting the new standards of AASL, ISTE and the NETS. Registration is open for all library media specialists to attend. Participants will also examine problem based activities & lessons pertaining to digital, web & media literacy, research best practices for Copyright & Fair Use, and explore digital citizenship and literacy curriculum resources.

The Library Media Specialist Academy meets September 27,  October 11, November 8, December 6, January 17, in February at the Midwest Education Technology Conference, and  April 25. Times for sessions are 4-7 p.m. each day, except for attendance at METC, which is 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. CSD members pay $395 for the academy, which includes a book plus METC conference fees; non-members pay $495.

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 Moving from Text Literacy to Media Literacy

Updated Workshop! Moving from Text Literacy to Media Literacy Moving from Text Literacy to Media Literacy is scheduled for June 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Are your students learning more from the media than from text? Do you want to understand the difference between media literacy, visual literacy and text literacy? All three of these are important 21st century skills, and we need to teach students to become knowledgeable media consumers and producers. In this one-day workshop, we will explore how the media is influencing the way we think, learn and even purchase.

Come learn how to analyze media messages and help promote safe, effective, student work in the 21st century and how to integrate this across the K-12 curriculum. You’ll share instructional strategies that work and discover how to measure learning outcomes for students and teachers.  We will share experiences with copyright and fair use while creating and promoting safe, legal multimedia projects for the classroom. Learn where to find, and how to properly cite, music, video clips, images and more. Leave this workshop with information about media literacy in order to formulate your own plan for integrating technology.  [$149 CSD member; $189 non-member | One Grad.
