Would you like to find other people to connect to besides those you see daily? Having a PLN (Personal Learning Network) allows you to learn and share with others around the world, 24/7. A PLN is a reciprocal network that you create based on your interests and needs. By developing your own PLN, you generate multiple opportunities to learn from, connect with, gather information and resources, then create and share with people like you. In this full day workshop for beginners, we will explain how to use an online community to develop your PLN and then share various tools that can help you do so. We will explore online learning communities such as Nings, Wikis, Moodle & LinkedIn; and social networks such as Google+, Facebook and Twitter. Become a digital learner through podcasts, YouTube, TeacherTube & SchoolTube. Set up an RSS feed to read your favorite blogs, news and other information in one place online. The tools shared can also be used in your classroom or professional development activities. Here’s what you’ll find from the Virtual Learning Center at SSA:

Presenter: Stephanie Madlinger, Program Coordinator & Technology Instructor, School Districts’ Virtual Learning Center, St. Louis, MO

Save Time Collecting Information with Google Forms
If you need to collect data, create surveys, or build a spreadsheet of information & chart it, this session is for you. Google Forms allows you to create simple forms to be used in collecting and collating information. With a simple click of a button you can have a chart or graph of your data to be shared with parents or the school board. In this hands-on session we will create an online version of the sample questionnaire or survey you bring. You can email it or share the entire form on your website today. In order to leave with a completed form, participants must have a Google Account or Gmail set up prior to this session.

Social Networking 101: Building Safe Online Relationships
A social network site allows people who share interests to build a ‘trusted’ network/ online community. A social network site will usually provide various ways for users to interact, such as IM (chat/ instant messaging), email, video sharing, file sharing, blogging, discussion groups, etc. Most contain libraries/ directories of some categories, such as former classmates, old work colleagues, and so on (like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn). These social networking sites provide a means to connect with friends and develop professional relationships by allowing users to create a detailed profile page. You’ll learn how to be safe while building safe online relationships.

Organize & Access Your Favorite Bookmarks Anytime, Anywhere
Online books allow you to access your favorite bookmarks anytime, anywhere. In this hands-on session we will create an iKeepBookmarks account so that you can use your favorite bookmarks at work, home or even on the road. iKeepBookmarks.com allows you to upload, and keep, your bookmarks on the web for free. You can access them at any time, anywhere, from any computer! Participants will also learn how to share your favorite webpages with friends and associates. Participants may want to bring your own laptop to upload your favorites and access your favorite bookmarks today!

Presenter: Martha Bogart, Program Coordinator & Technology Instructor, School Districts’ Virtual Learning Center, St. Louis, MO

See What Skype Can Do For You!
Learn exactly what Skype is and how communicating with Skype can save you and your employer money! Skype is jam-packed and bursting with cool stuff that makes it easier, more fun and useful to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. One week ago, on “Friday, March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake struck Sendai, Japan, resulting in a devastating tsunami that ravaged the coast just 180 miles from Tokyo. In response, Students Rebuild [who works with Global Nomads Group] partnered with DoSomething.org, to ensure students worldwide have a way to support their Japanese peers.

Help Japan by making paper cranes. These simple yet powerful gestures will trigger a $200,000 donation from the Bezos Family Foundation$2 for each crane received – to Architecture for Humanity’s reconstruction efforts in Japan. Once we reach our goal of 100,000 submissions, the cranes will be woven into an art installation – a symbolic gift from students around the globe to Japanese youth.”

How it works:

• Make a paper crane (watch a how-to video)

• Snap a photo and upload it, along with a message of support to the Facebook page “Paper Cranes for Japan”

• Turn your crane into dollars for reconstruction – and eventually an art installation – by mailing it to Students Rebuild. Or, team up with friends and fold as many as you can! Email Students Rebuild to receive a pre-paid shipping label for large boxes:

Challenger Crew

For many, the Challenger shuttle disaster 25 years ago is a vivid memory. For others, including children in elementary, middle school and high school, it is only a historical event. In either case, the Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis is offering ways to honor the  lost 1986 Challenger crew-

Tell Us Your Story. . .
Where Were You on January 28, 1986 when we lost the Challenger shuttle?

Send the Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis a Where Were You? video. Share your personal story or interview someone who remembers the event, in a short video. Submissions must be no longer that 1 minute in length, and select videos will be shared on Challenger Learning Center’s Facebook and Flickr page.

From Global Nomads Group:

As the spotlight on post-quake Haiti dwindles, Architecture for Humanity, the Bezos Family Foundation and Global Nomads Group recognize there is still much work to be done to rebuild Haiti. Students Rebuild remains committed to Haiti’s reconstruction efforts with a $500,000 challenge grant to rebuild stronger, safer, permanent schools in Haiti!

We warmly invite you to join us in this significant endeavor during the upcoming school year – one that will allow your students to interact with their Haitian peers, empower them to become young, global philanthropists and follow the progress of their fundraising efforts. So far, we have raised $106,223 in less than 6 months!

In the 2010-2011 school year, we will roll out a comprehensive Students Rebuild Haiti program that will include:

• national standards-based, four-module curriculum covering Haiti’s socio-cultural and geopolitical background, school reconstruction and the education system, international relations and student philanthropy
• live videoconference series from Haiti with Global Nomads Group throughout the school year (including an educator introduction session and a student wrap-up session)
• webcasts that will feature Architecture for Humanity staff and other NGO members working on the ground for a live progress report
• calls to action, collaborative projects and activities that your team can engage in throughout the school year.

Visit our “Field Notes” blog and our Facebook & Twitter pages for the latest news from Haiti.

VIDEOCONFERENCE PROGRAM REGISTRATION OPENS ON AUGUST 23.  For more information, please visit http://www.studentsrebuild.org. To learn more about Global Nomads Group, visit their website.
