mobile classDo you have a mobile device and want to learn how to find education-friendly apps? In this hands-on session at Cooperating School Districts, we will explore a multitude of education friendly, content- based resources for your mobile device for multiple grade levels and subject areas.

Learn how to find apps for any content area
and get a chance to learn how to use them
in this June 19th BYOD session.

During this full-day session lead by Greg Lawrence, other websites and online resources will also be shown, like app finders, utility apps, and apps your students can use in 1:1 environments. You must bring your own mobile device– Android or Apple. This workshop is $145 for a CSD member and $185 for a  non-member. Space is limited, register today!

Do you have an iPad or Android tablet?  Are you wondering if creating a digital story is too difficult? Help your students create their own digital stories by experiencing the process yourself.

This workshop teaches the pre-production, production and post-production phases of digital storytelling. You will have an opportunity to use either iMovie for the iPad or various Android apps. Bring a story to share, or select from one of the stories provided.  Walk away with your own 2-3 minute movie and lots of ideas about how to help students create one. This is a BYOD workshop on June 5. Bring your own mobile device.

Workshop runs 8:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at CSD.
Cost: $145 CSD member; $185 non-member | Register online

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 METC 2013 Welcomes Keynotes Ken Shelton and Lucy Gray

The 30th annual Midwest Education Technology Conference takes place February 11-13, 2013. Cooperating School Districts is pleased to announce the 2013 Keynote Speakers. Both of them are Apple Distinguished Educators and Google Certified Teachers, and work closely with and in schools:

Ken Shelton on Tuesday, February 12, 8:00-9:15 am

Ken holds an M.A. in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology as well as New Media Design and Production. As a part of his active involvement within the Educational Technology community, Ken is a Discovery STAR Educator, and serves on the Board of Directors for Computer Using Educators “CUE”. Ken was also named to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Educational Technology Task Force. Ken regularly gives keynotes, presentations, and leads workshops, many of which are hands-on, covering a wide variety of Educational Technology, Technology Storytelling, and Instructional Design topics. He has worked as an educator for over 10 years and currently teaches technology at the middle school level. Follow Ken on Twitter @k_shelton.

Lucy Gray on Wednesday, February 13, 8:00-9:15 am

As an education consultant, Lucy works with a variety of institutions on 21st century learning initiatives, including directing the Consortium for School Networking’s Leadership for Mobile Learning initiative. She began her career as a primary grade teacher in Chicago Public Schools, and has served in various capacities related to educational technology at the University of Chicago’s Laboratory Schools, Urban Education Institute, and Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education. Wednesday, May 30, 2012 CSD’s Bring Your Own Device Workshops

This summer in the tele, we have several BYOD (bring your own device – iPad, tablet, laptop, etc.) workshops on the schedule. In June, there are seven workshops: Digital Age Leadership: A New Paradigm for Learning on 6/5;  Getting Organized as a 21st Century Educator with Google Tools on 6/7; Choosing Education-Friendly Apps on 6/11; Lights, Camera, Action: Creating Movies with Green Screens on 6/15; Flipping Your Classroom with Flip Cameras and Screencasting 6/21; and Android Tablet Boot Camp/Educational Apps for Android Tablets on 6/22. (For the workshops on June 21st and 22nd only, we will provide the equipment if you do not own any yourself). In July, we have just one required BYOD session- the three-day workshop entitled Digital Storytelling with Mobile Devices, which takes place 7/10, 7/11 and 7/13. Of course, if you are more comfortable working on your own computer, feel free to bring it in for any professional development session we hold!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 creating book trailers using video editing apps

It was my pleasure to visit two outstanding classrooms recently in the Normandy School District as part of our ITEF Grant involving iPad use in the classroom.  One was a fifth grade classroom and one was a combined 2nd-3rd grade gifted classroom.  In both rooms, students were engaged and on task with their goal of creating book trailers using video editing apps on their iPads.  Teachers had already taken them through the script writing process, and they had created storyboards of the movies they wanted to make.  In each classroom, students were busy finding pictures on the Internet or on other iPad apps that illuminated their stories.  They were using higher order thinking skills to decide what kinds of pictures they needed, how to download them and how to edit them, so that they would fit into the book trailers.  Some students were using the camera feature on the iPad to actually take pictures.  This was a highly engaging task, and students rose to it well.  I had the opportunity to read some of the scripts, which were actually persuasive pieces, and they were excellent.  It was very gratifying to see that the teachers that I had worked with in professional development sessions were implementing their knowledge so well in their classrooms.  Congrats to these teachers and their terrific students!

Digital Storytelling with Mobile Devices takes place July 10, 11 & 13, each day from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  Do you have an iPad or Android tablet?  Are you wondering if creating a digital story is too difficult? Help your students create their own digital stories by experiencing the process yourself. This three-day workshop (where you earn two graduate credits) teaches the pre-production, production and post-production phases of digital storytelling. You will have an opportunity to use either iMovie for the iPad or various Android apps. The workshop is a cross between a writer’s workshop and a movie-making symposium. Bring a story to share, or select from one of the stories provided.  Walk away with your own 2-3 minute movie and lots of ideas about how to help students create one. Bring your own mobile device. Cost for all three days: $369 CSD member; $459 non-member.

These days there is a lot of focus on iPads in K-12 education. What about the schools that have embraced a non-Apple tablet? Here’s an opportunity for those educators to learn more about what they can do on their Andriod device! Check out these upcoming workshops (take one, or both!) from Cooperating School Districts:

Android Tablet Boot Camp on June 22, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Tablets are revolutionizing the classroom. With information at your student’s fingertips, and apps that can focus on a specific concept and engage our students, no wonder they are a success. Learn techniques to navigate Android devices, customize settings, and install apps. Discover apps that can be used at any grade level and how to find them, while building a toolkit at the same time. Join us if you are an Android amateur or a Google guru; there will be something for everyone. You may bring your Android device, or we will share one with you.

Educational Apps for Android Tablets on June 22, from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
This is a continuation of the Android Tablet Boot Camp workshop. Spend the afternoon learning about some great educational Android apps. Find out which apps can be used for classroom management & assessment, and which apps fit best into the different content areas such as math and language arts. Walk away with a list of apps and and feel confident on how they can be effectively used in schools.
