2013 METCSubmit a proposal for the 2014 Midwest Education Technology Conference this summer! As you can see from 2013 keynote Ken Shelton, you’ll jump for joy if your submission is accepted! The preconference proposal deadline is August 23, 2013 and the general session submissions deadline is September 15, 2013. The advisory committee will review all proposals in the fall and the presenters will be notified of their acceptance by October. bookstoreHave you visited the book store section of the Midwest Education Technology Conference website? There are several selections available- for children and adults- interested in all things technology!

If you are interested in purchasing books prior to the conference in February, you can place a pre-order. Your order will be ready for pick-up at METC at the St. Charles Convention Center. All titles have a METC discount; by ordering before or at the conference, you’ll save!

METC celebrates its 30th anniversary February 11-13, 2013, and is a program of Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis.

 Award. Making IT Happen is an internationally recognized awards program for educators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K–12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation. Do you know an educator who makes IT happen in their school or district? Please complete the brief nomination form by
January 25, 2013.

Rena RockwellWinners will be awarded at the annual Midwest Education Technology Conference and later acknowledged at ISTE’s national conference. Past affiliate winners are Diana Dell, Greg Lawrence, Ruth Litman-Block, and Rena Rockwell. In addition to Making IT Happen, there are many ways METC recognizes our members. Below are the annual award opportunities:

  • Outstanding Teacher

    This award recognizes and honors one teacher who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education.
  • Outstanding Leader

    This award recognizes and honors one leader who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education.
  • Outstanding Young Educator
    This annual award is presented to an outstanding young educator (under the age of 35) who demonstrates vision, innovation, action, and transformation using technology to improve teaching and learning. The work of the selected educator will reflect ISTE’s mission and purpose and can be used to model best practices in the field. Anyone may nominate an eligible candidate, including affiliates.

The nomination form for these awards is also taking submissions until January 25. Learn more about the METC Affiliate at csdvlc.org.

Registration is now open for the 30th annual Midwest Education Technology Conference in St. Charles, Missouri at METCconference.org. METC, a program of Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis, is February 11, 12, and 13, 2013. This year’s theme is Motivate, Engage, Transform, Connect. Nine strands include:

2013 Midwest Spotlight Educator Bill Bass is a former middle and high school English teacher who now works with teachers as an Instructional Coach in the Parkway School District. Bill is also an adjunct professor of educational technology for Missouri Baptist University. As a speaker, writer and professional developer, he focuses on systemic and sustainable integration of technology into classrooms at all grade levels. He is Co-President of Educational Technology Association of Greater St. Louis, a Google Certified Teacher and DEN Star Educator, Member-at-Large for the ISTE Innovative Learning Technology SIG. 2013 Midwest Spotlight Educator Linda J. Dougherty is a high school librarian and district library chair in the Northwest R-I School District, and is surprised by her reputation as a social media maven and tech toy geek. Linda belongs to the ISTE’s Special Interest Group Media Specialists, SIGMS, where she has built her PLN by presenting at the 21st Century Digital SIGMS Playgrounds.  She is a member of ALA, AASL, ASCD, MASL, MSTA, is a DEN Star, and a Google Apps for Education District Administrator. 2013 Midwest Spotlight Educator Josh Stumpenhorst is a 6th grade Language Arts & Social Science teacher from Naperville. He is an ISTE Emerging Leader, OfficeMax Innovative Educator, Those Who Excel Classroom Teacher Nominee, ICE Educator of the Year, Illinois Education Association Educator of the Year and the 2012 Illinois Teacher of the Year. Josh has presented technology and education topics at Illinois ASCD Conference, Illinois Reading Conference, Illinois Computing Educators Conference, EDCamp Chicago, Reform Symposium 3, and ISTE. Cooperating School Districts’ Library Media Specialist (LMS) Academy focuses on the changing role of the Library Media Specialist in K-12 education. Today’s LMS must play the versatile role of an instructional partner responsible for ensuring that students and staff are efficient and effective users of information. By participating in the annual academy, you will network with colleagues working in school libraries across the area and globally, understand the meaning of media literacy as it applies to 21st century skills, and learn about digital tools that promote effective use of digital media for students.  The academy will assist you in teaching and connecting the new standards of AASL, ISTE and the NETS. Registration is open for all library media specialists to attend. Participants will also examine problem based activities & lessons pertaining to digital, web & media literacy, research best practices for Copyright & Fair Use, and explore digital citizenship and literacy curriculum resources.

The Library Media Specialist Academy meets September 27,  October 11, November 8, December 6, January 17, in February at the Midwest Education Technology Conference, and  April 25. Times for sessions are 4-7 p.m. each day, except for attendance at METC, which is 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. CSD members pay $395 for the academy, which includes a book plus METC conference fees; non-members pay $495.
