The VLC ITT team has been meeting to discuss the new tele courses we will offer this summer, then again in the fall and spring. What we do know is that we will offer both MAC & PC platforms in the MS Office Suite. With our new MAC computers with dual processors and Parallels installed, it is easy to flip from PC to MAC in a few seconds…so cool!

We also know we will offer both SMART Board and Promethean Activboard training. Many are requesting advanced unitedstreaming, more Web 2.0 courses with blogging, podcasting, and social networking.  Internet Safety/Netiquette courses are a growing request as well.

The final course offerings will be posted in April, so make sure to check back. In the meantime if you are interested in other courses, let us know. Keep in mind that most of our technology classes offer University credit through Lindenwood University. Also we can offer any of our classes as on-site PD or through videoconferencing too!

Wow, the beginning of March sure doesn’t look like spring will ever arrive! However, Nancy George and I just returned from the RCET Conference in Springfield, MO where we were “sprung” into a variety of cool tools.
We are excited to bring back some wonderful ideas to share with our area school districts. Some of the great presenters were from the St. Louis area. Cindy Lane, from the Lindbergh School District shared her expertise about Google Earth and free online resources. Amy Vejraska and DeAnna Sheets from the Branson School District shared great resources for Web 2.0. Jim Tice was generous enough to share several free resources Missouri State University is offering Missouri Educators. Nancy and I learned about various “clickers” and Virtual Field Trips as well. We plan to use these great ideas and resources in our newly offered tele classes this summer. Watch for our summer technology classes in the mail or check our website the last week of April. Register early! Since many of our courses allow for University credit, they fill up fast!

Beginning our 3rd year of ITEA, the VLC is proud to offer 4 area districts long term professional development. The Integrating Technology Educators Academy (ITEA) is a flexible model that can be customized to a school or districts needs. The ITEA is based on the goals of the participating educators. Participants can receive professional development using a variety of technology skills, such as SMARTboards, webquests, unitedstreaming, MS Office, and Web 2.0. Educators find our ITEA successful because of the individualized professional development we offer.
For over 10 years, CSD has offered another academy, Support Staff Academy. The SSA is developed differently based on the feedback of a committee made of area district support staff. Participants can attend one, all, or a combination. Participants can learn about Legal Issues, Organization Skills, MS Office Tips & Tricks, email or many others.
The VLC began the 7th cohort group in October with the TLA, Technology Leadership Academy. School leaders attend a year long academy learning how to integrate technology into their jobs. Participants learn about online resources, evaluation tools, and create an action plan for their position. These leaders are provided a handheld computer and learn how to keep organized, collaborate and evaluate using this small but mighty tool.To learn more about any of our academies visit our website http://www.csd.org and click on Technology.

In January I spent the day at our Capitol Building in Jefferson City at the Show-Me TechKnowledge Day 2008. This was a chance for Missouri K-12 students to “show their stuff”. There were several groups of students representing school districts from across the state, including CSD member schools, Francis Howell and Maplewood Richmond Heights. I was very impressed with the group of students representing the districts. They were professional and able to communicate extremely well.

The goal of this annual event is to demonstrate to legislators, educators, students and others statewide how technology is currently being used in Missouri schools to enhance learning and improve student achievement.

The Virtual Learning Center had a display showcasing our Show-Me a Movie Contest. All 2007 winners were on display for other school districts, legislators, and patrons to see. They will be officially recognized at the Winners Reception on Tuesday, February 5th at our Midwest Education Technology Conference in St. Charles.

Since this is a fourth grade curriculum focus and I am an educator, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity for me to have my 4th grade daughter help me with the CSD display. She, along with the other students received a t-shirt and recognition. We were also able to experience both the House and Senate in session.

What a wonderful experience for educators, students and parents. Mark you calendar for this annual event. I hope to see even more displays of how technology is being used in the classroom.

Kelley Simers demos Promethean Kelley Simers visited with the VLC Instructional  Technology Team (ITT) sharing a  demonstration of the  Promethean Activboard. This board is similar to the  SMARTboard that many of our member districts own.  The purpose of the demo was to  increase awareness,  as well as provide additional support and professional  development to our area schools in the future. Each VLC member was able to try the Activote, a wire-free, hand held voting device for teachers to use with the board. The ITT was also allowed the chance to try the Activslate, interactive wire-free mini board that allows the user to stand in a different position around the room to use the board. Kelley also shared the many resources teachers can use with the board. The VLC was excited to learn more about yet another technology that is helping to improve teaching, and ultimately student learning.
