21/12/12 Supporting Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships in the 21st Century

It’s time for the American education system to join the 21st century; continuing to do what we have always done is putting our youth at a disadvantage in today’s technology-driven global society.
To become better, we first need to dare to be different. In this session- Supporting Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships in the 21st Century with Quad D Leadership - on January 17, Raymond J. McNulty will share an overview of next practices intended to push us to not only become leaders of this transformation, but to put our values into action. Our agenda as educators should be plain and simple: create a new, vibrant educational system driven by rigor, relevance, and relationships for all learners. This session will describe how they contribute to building 21st century systems, schools, and classrooms founded on the 3Rs: rigor, relevance, and relationships.
Quad D Leadership is a blending of vision and empowerment and involves an adaptive process by which leaders, staff, and students take action to improve teaching and learning in their school. Quadrant D Leadership is situation-specific and comes into play when there is a need for direction or action. This session will describe all aspects of the Quadrant D Leadership Framework: authoritative, creative, collaborative, and adaptive.
Ray McNulty is a Senior Fellow to the International Center for Leadership in Education, having previously served as President. Prior to joining the International Center, he was a senior fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he worked with leading educators on improving our nation’s high schools. He is committed to raising performance standards for both teachers and students and to building solid connections between schools and their communities. Ray believes strongly that education systems cannot wait for the children and challenges to arrive at school; rather, schools need to reach out and help forge solutions. 21/12/12 Foundations for the Common Core
Created for teachers, administrators, leaders, and staff who have had little or no introduction to the Common Core State Standards, these beginning workshops provide the essential foundational understanding of the Missouri Core Academic Standards (CAS) for English Language Arts or Math.
Each full-day workshop offered by Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis will focus on exploring the foundation for the standards, navigating the document, understanding the learning progressions and recognizing the major shifts in content, instruction and assessment. The objectives for the workshop include:
- Learn how to navigate the ELA or Math standards document/domains & clusters
- Analyze the ELA or Math anchor standards & grade level learning progressions
- Understand the major shifts in the ELA or Math standards, comparing to GLE’s
Participants will leave with a very practical understanding of the Core Academic Standards for English Language Arts or Math, as well as strategies and resources to support them as they begin to transition to the Core Academic Standards. Each participant will need a printed copy of the Common Core State Standards for the appropriate workshop: corestandards.org/the-standards (please bring ELA & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, as well as Appendix A, B, and C, or Math & Appendix A).

Dana Humphrey is a Common Core ELA Consultant for the Cooperating School Districts. Dana is a master teacher with 32 years of educational experience as a middle school English teacher, department chair, district curriculum coordinator and professional development presenter locally and at the state and national level.
Jan Keenoy is a Common Core Math Consultant for the Cooperating School Districts. Jan has been a Missouri educator for over 40 years, teaching in elementary and middle school classrooms, Parents as Teachers, and serving as an Elementary Coordinator supporting curricular, instructional, assessment planning, implementation, and providing extensive professional development.

19/12/12 Using Sensory Integration Strategies to Help Students Focus
This workshop on January 18, 2013 will include a brief overview of the seven sensory systems along with sensory integration strategies that can be utilized in classrooms to increase student engagement and time on task. After this all day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn a variety of strategies to take back to their classrooms, and leave with a book of resources.
Capitalizing on her 25+ years in the field of education, Karen Westhoff brings a hands-on, practical approach to her workshops. Prior to being a School Improvement Consultant at Cooperating School Districts, Karen has served as a Special Education Teacher, a Lead Teacher for TIP (Therapeutic Intervention Program), and as the Director of St. Gertrude’s Preschool in Washington, Missouri. Certified as an administrator in Missouri, Karen developed and implemented an At-risk Behavior Program for grades K-6. In her quest to support educators in fostering environments that support student growth, she continues to present on topics such as Positive Behavior Support and Sensory Integration. Karen looks forward to continually share effective strategies with other educators in Missouri with a passion for student development.

17/12/12 From Tragedy to Triumph –– The Journey of the Joplin Schools
From Tragedy to Triumph –– The Journey of the Joplin Schools – this Midwest Education Technology Conference Leadership Lunch Keynote takes place Tuesday, February 12, from 12-2 p.m. with Dr. C.J. Huff, Superintendent of Joplin Schools.
Joplin Schools was devastated by an EF-5 tornado on May 22, 2011. In spite of heavy losses, the school district rallied the community to open schools on time 87 days later. This session will provide an overview of some of the current challenges and opportunities faced by the Joplin Schools as it endeavors to turn this terrible tragedy into an amazing opportunity to reinvent public education for its children.
Dr. Huff’s recognitions include People Magazine’s “2011 Heroes Among Us,” eSchool News 2012 Tech-Savvy Superintendent Award, Missouri Association of School Administrators 2012 Pearce Award. To attend this luncheon at METC, additional registration is required at a cost of $30.

Have you visited the book store section of the Midwest Education Technology Conference website? There are several selections available- for children and adults- interested in all things technology!
If you are interested in purchasing books prior to the conference in February, you can place a pre-order. Your order will be ready for pick-up at METC at the St. Charles Convention Center. All titles have a METC discount; by ordering before or at the conference, you’ll save!
METC celebrates its 30th anniversary February 11-13, 2013, and is a program of Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis.

12/12/12 Constitutional Academy from Bill of Rights Institute this July for Students
The Bill of Rights Institute’s Constitutional Academy Summer Program takes place in July, and the institute is inviting outstanding students apply. The Constitutional Academy is for students who want to learn from college professors and policy experts about how government, economics, and current events connect. Students who have just completed their sophomore, 
junior, or senior year of high school will spend July 15-20, 2013 in Washington, D.C., unlocking American history by digging into the Founding documents.
Scholarships are available for students who qualify, and there is no need to fill out a separate application for the scholarship. Each student who is accepted will be automatically considered for scholarships.Students with scholarships will have the costs of meals, lodging, site visits, and programming covered by the Bill of Rights Institute. Students will be responsible for travel costs to and from Washington, D.C. For students who do not qualify for scholarships, the cost for the week is $750 plus travel costs to and from D.C. The current agenda is as follows:

10/12/12 ACCESS for ELLs Test Administration Refresher
Today at CSD, Marlow Barton and Debra Cole (pictured) are offering professional development on World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment Consortium (WIDA) and Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners (or, ACCESS for ELLs). ACCESS for ELLs is a large-scale language proficiency assessment given to kindergarten through 12th graders who have been identified as English language learners. It is given annually in WIDA Consortium member states (like Missouri) to monitor students’ progress in acquiring academic English.
In the full-day professional development session, participants- anyone administering the ACCESS, or is new to the field of ELL- will review and have time for question and answer sessions on:
• the test & materials
• test distribution & security
• administration of the four parts
• rating the open-ended speaking test
• kindergarten administration
Coming up in January, Marlow and Debra will hold two other WIDA professional development sessions: Introduction to the Missouri (WIDA) ELD (English Language Development) Standards on January 14, and CLIMBS: Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success on January 29th. CLIMBS stands for Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success; the January session is the first of five. The other dates include: Monday, March 11; Thursday, March 28; Tuesday, April 30; Tuesday, May 28. All sessions are still accepting registrations and you can enroll online.

07/12/12 2012 Show-Me a Movie Deadline in 1 Week
Just a few reminders about the Show-Me a Movie Digital Storytelling Contest:
• Entries must be received no later than 3 p.m. CST on December 14, 2012. Entries received after this deadline will not be considered.
• Movies must be submitted via the web: required website for upload is SchoolTube. The online entry form includes a space for the URL to be submitted to CSD. We no longer accept movies on CD.
• There are two online forms (entry form- one per movie and reflection- one per student) as part of the submission process.
• The contest is now open for submissions from elementary (2-5), middle school, and high school students in Missouri + Illinois.
• Movies that lack the proper citations for resources used within the submission will automatically be disqualified from judging,
rather than just points taken off total score, as judges have done in previous years.

Cooperating School Districts’ ISTE Affiliate (Missouri Educational Technology Community) is currently seeking nominations for the Making IT Happen
Award. Making IT Happen is an internationally recognized awards program for educators and leaders in the field of educational technology integration in K–12 schools. The program identifies and rewards educational technology leaders around the world for their commitment and innovation. Do you know an educator who makes IT happen in their school or district? Winners will be awarded at the annual Midwest Education Technology Conference and later acknowledged at ISTE’s national conference. Past affiliate winners are Diana Dell, Greg Lawrence, Ruth Litman-Block, and Rena Rockwell. In addition to Making IT Happen, there are many ways METC recognizes our members. Below are the annual award opportunities:
- Outstanding Teacher
This award recognizes and honors one teacher who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education. - Outstanding Leader
This award recognizes and honors one leader who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership in implementing technology to improve education. - Outstanding Young Educator
This annual award is presented to an outstanding young educator (under the age of 35) who demonstrates vision, innovation, action, and transformation using technology to improve teaching and learning. The work of the selected educator will reflect ISTE’s mission and purpose and can be used to model best practices in the field. Anyone may nominate an eligible candidate, including affiliates.

The Learning Division’s Martha Bogart leads the Technology Leadership Academy morning discussion
The 2012-2013 Technology Leadership Academy, or TLA as we call it, continues today at Cooperating School Districts. Martha Bogart leads this year-long professional development, and during the course of the year, participants- from several school (districts)- work on improving classroom use of technology; developing a vision of how to use technology to improve student performance; assessing strengths and needs of colleagues and the children they work with; developing a practical and useful technology plan; and focusing on leadership skills.
