31/07/12 New Technology Leadership Academy Dates Announced

Network with area educators at CSD during TLA

Registration is now open for all educators (superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, assistant principals, librarians, media specialists, tech coordinators, and teachers) to attend the 2012-2013 Technology Leadership Academy. This annual, 6-day professional development academy from Cooperating School Districts will assist educators in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to use technology as a tool for more effective and efficient leadership in their schools. Educators from Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas have participated in the past. The academy addresses:

• Improving classroom use of technology
• Developing a vision of how to use technology to improve student performance
• Assessing technology strengths and needs of your staff/students
• Developing a practical and useful technology plan
• Expanding your network of colleagues
• Focusing on leadership skills in technology

TLA dates this year are: October 10, November 7, December 5, January 9, February 12 (at the Midwest Education Technology Conference), and March 6.

Participants receive an iPad with 3G capability, a course book, 35 hours of professional development training, plusone day attendance at METC   for a cost of $1,600; if you do not want the iPad, the cost lowers to $1,000. P.O.’s and credit cards are accepted.  Click here to register!

24/07/12 Visiting Alaska, but Not Getting Cool

Kemper Art Museum‘s Allison Taylor connected to Cooper Landing Library in Alaska today via videoconference to talk about art, history, and art history.  Another part of the conversation  that wasn’t included in the curriculum was comparing weather- the VC participants had on sweatshirts and spoke of temperatures in the 50s, while Allison shared St. Louis is experiencing yet another 100+ degree day with no rain. The Kemper Art Museum presents free videoconferences from Cooperating School Districts on Tuesdays. If you are interested, contact CSD.

19/07/12 how schools are generating sustainability funding for technology

Digital Wish is conducting a research study that explores how schools are generating sustainability funding for their technology programs.  They are already discovering a host of clever funding strategies. Afterwards, the research results will be shared with all participants who took part in the study.

After the research period, they’ll be publishing a “Sustainability Report” and three articles on how the most successful schools are sustaining their technology programs. 19/07/12 End July by attending Connecting Digital & Print Literacy Workshop

One of our final tele summer workshops is Connecting Digital and Print Literacy – Creating Book Trailers on July 30. From  8:30 to 3:30, learn how book trailers are a great way to connect digital and print literacy in a real-world application. This is a popular session; we have offered as a Midwest Education Technology Conference precon for several years now.

On Monday the 30th, discover how to create and manage a book trailer project in your classroom during this one-day workshop. We’ll make book trailers using Photostory 3 – a free Microsoft download.  The workshop will cover how to help your students select their audience, and decide how to construct their message to accomplish the persuasive goal of the trailer. We’ll touch on copyright compliance issues & practice finding acceptable images and music.  Creating voice-overs using the free download Audacity program will be demonstrated.

Not sure if this is for you? Don’t worry- the skills covered can be applied to any subject area and any grade level. In addition, 1 graduate credit is available if you are interested. The cost of this session is $110 for a CSD member and $140 for a non-member. Register today!

17/07/12 How-to Grade Digital Work

We’re excited to share this new professional development opportunity with you, coming up next week-  Grading Digital Work. What does good feedback look like? How does one provide proper feedback on student created multi-media projects? How do you create formative and summative assessments for use in today’s classrooms?

In this workshop, come learn how to create rubrics, scoring guides, checklists, and other forms of assessments for and of learning that truly measure what students have learned. With the digital technologies that we have available, it opens up a wealth of new ways for students to show their learning. Many of these tools also make it easy for students to work collaboratively. We will take a look at how these assessments differentiate instruction and how they allow for student creativity. Models will be shown, and online access to information and examples will be given. You’ll have an opportunity to explore grading tools like RubiStar, Google Forms, Flubaroo, and DE Quiz Builder.

We will also show tips & tricks for providing feedback on digital work through commenting by text and voice. Come with an open mind and discover new, flexible feedback and evaluation methods. This full-day workshop is July 25 from  8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is  $110 for a CSD member and $140 for a non-member. In addition, 1 graduate credit is available for this workshop. 16/07/12 MoDLA 2012 Conference Program Available

Next week is the Missouri Distance Learning Association‘s annual conference. This summer, it will be held in St. Louis, Missouri. Cooperating School Districts‘ Nancy George and Stephanie Madlinger (MoDLA‘s 2011 Excellence Winner in K-12) will be presenting on Friday, July 27th at the conference. 10/07/12 Using Skype to Discuss Using Digital Portfolios to Collect & Evaluate Student Work

Today in her Using Digital Portfolios to Collect & Evaluate Student Work workshop, Stephanie Madlinger connected briefly via Skype to high school English teacher Nicholas Provenzano, who holds a Masters Degree in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. He discussed with the St. Louis participants at Cooperating School Districts how he uses Web 2.0 to encourage student writing- citing Google Apps, Blogger and Evernote as his favorites. Cooperating School Districts‘ tele has workshops through the end of July this summer on Using Digital Portfolios to Collect & Evaluate Student Work, Digital Citizenship, Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, plus more. CSD members only pay $110 for each 1-day workshop. Our PD is also bring your own device friendly, so you can bring your own laptop, smartphone, tablet or iPad.
