MARCH 4 EDIT:
interactive sessions are now full; we have a couple VIEW ONLY available

Author & artist Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw will be at CSD Friday, May 9 to videoconference with 3 classes! Kindergarten thru second grade teachers, if you want your class to interact with this author, please sign up with me- soon.  Our author visits fill up fast!

About the book:  My Travelin’ Eye is a refreshing take on “feeling different.” It shows how a disability can be turned into an advantage, with a bit of creativity. This book can be used in the classroom as an introduction to the creative process—where ideas come from, and how to make something of your ideas!

About the author: Jenny Sue not only wrote this wonderful story, but she illustrated the book as well. She will read the book and answer student questions about the character, being an author and working as an illustrator. New Links to New Learning is really excited to have her here from her home in New Mexico! For more information about Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw, visit her website: www.dancingelephantstudio.com.

Hi Rebecca,

I’m really excited to share my story and visit with the students via-video in May! It is extra-special for me because St. Louis is my home-town. Thanks so much for inviting me. I know it will be a lot of fun!

Oh, it will be a lot of fun. The students will have many wonderful questions for you during the videoconference! They’ll be extra-excited to know you are from Missouri!

Jenny Sue–

Is there anything you want the students to do in preparation for your visit with them? Should they make a list of questions to ask you? Any help you can give the teachers to help them prepare their students would be welcome. Thanks so much!

Hi Martha, I just saw your question. Thanks for asking! I plan to give a short presentation for the students (in addition to reading my book) with images from my world, sharing my background and life as an illustrator. That will perhaps spark more questions for them. I think it would be good if they could read my book before May 9th so you can discuss it as a class. Also, they might want to ask about my process (of writing stories and illustrating), where my ideas come from, and why/how I wrote My Travelin’ Eye. I hope that gives you some ideas. I imagine their curiosities will provide a lot of questions, too! I look forward to seeing you in May!

[...] Elementary classes from the Francis Howell, Clayton and Ladue School districts will connect for a one hour videoconference with author/illustrator Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw next week. The Virtual Learning Center is really excited to bring this St. Louis native into St. Louis schools. Jenny Sue will be talking with the students about her new picture book, My Travelin’ Eye – ‘ Jenny Sue’s eyes are different from other people’s eyes. Her right eye looks in one direction, while her left eye sometimes wanders. Jenny Sue has a travelin,’ lazy eye. Although it makes her different, it also helps her see the world in a special way. Here is a charming story about one very inspiring little girl.’ (see Author Visit on May 9, 2008)  [...]
